It is hardened only by cold working, not by heat-treatment, as are all high chromium-nickel steels. Type 301 is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel that is available in the annealed and cold worked conditions. Type 301 Stainless Steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel that provides high strength and good ductility when cold worked. Type 301 (UNS S 30100) is an austenitic chromium-nickel strip coil stainless steel that can attain high tensile strength and ductility by cold-working.
